       USED FOR? Cable wires need to be placed underground before installation takes place.  These wires are meant to provide a service that will resist storms , heavy rains and give a clear signal to telephone users.  When these thieves dig and steal the cables the effect is: 

BUSINESS CUSTOMERS: 

  1. Cannot make or receive faxes 
  2. Cannot make or receive calls 
  3. Do not have access to the Internet 
  4. Goods cannot be ordered and delivered on time 
  5. Cannot make or receive orders 
  6. Inefficient telecommunication service can cause major losses or closure of  business 
RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS: 
  1. Cannot make or receive phone calls 
  2. Police cannot be notified of a criminal act taking place at a specific time 
  3. A child cannot phone when he or she is stranded 
  4. Parents cannot check on their children at home 
  5. Emergency calls cannot be made 
Cables cost different amounts of money because of thier difference in size for example 8272 meters 12 fibre cable size cost R133000: 1216 meters 24 fibre cable size cost R27 000  while a 6920 meters 8 fibre cable size cost R76 000 

The measures taken by Telkom to prevent cable theft has resulted in the value of cables being stolen having dropped by over R5 million to R37 732 100 during the past financial year (1997/98). 

Telkom has suffered a R37,7-million loss  nationally due to cable theft last year, with more than 1000 incidents in Johannesburg alone , which cost the company R6,6-million.
