Telkom has installed fibre optic cables , microwave and wireless local loop implimentation especially in areas that are notoriously vulnerable to cable theft. This is one of the steps which they have taken to prevent cable theft. 

The company has appointed Investigation Unit Personnel whose tasks are protecting Telkom against criminal activities .Joint operations with the South African Police Services takes place on a regular basis.

Placement of  sophisticated alarm systems on frequently targeted sections of the network are there to assist with the recovery of stolen copper cables and the arrest of the criminals.

Telkom has joint forces with Eskom, Spoornet  and the Chamber of Mines to produce more effective legislation to help curb the activities of the illegal scrap dealers by making it more difficult to sell the stolen copper cables. 

A reward of  up to R50 000 is given depending on the amount of information and the size of cable stolen.  Customers can call  the toll- free number  0800 124-124 when the cable theft is witnessed or suspected . 

In some cases Telkom has been able to track down these thieves. It was a result of a good co-operation between the community and the police in tracking down these thieves and bringing them forward to the justice system.
