Some groups of seaweed form flat crusts. A notable feature is that the corallines are jam-packed with lime, a reputed deterrent to grazers. Generally the thicker crusted groups are stronger competitors, overgrowing the thinner crusts, but they are slower-growing and less tolerant of grazing.
