Hurricanes
Hurricane Safety
Hurricanes occur in the Atlantic Ocean, but are called typhoons in the Pacific.
They are spiral-shaped storms with swirling winds that travel at speeds greater
than 75 miles per hour. The storm builds over the ocean and travels across the
water. A hurricane usually gives people plenty of warning in order to escape
from its path.
If you live in a low area during a hurricane warning, it is wise to evacuate.
Cover windows with boards and protect as much of your property as possible.
Stay indoors during the hurricane. Be prepared with battery powered radios
and flashlights. Be sure to have large containers of water and food that
does not need refrigeration in plentiful supply. When the wind goes down,
you may be in the eye of the storm. Do not venture out until the storm is
over. Stay away from wires or electrical lines. Report any downed electrical
lines or broken water mains or sewers to officials.
