Safety Equipment
Helmets are by far the most important piece of
safety equipment for bicyclists. A helmet protects your brain. Your brain is
the control center for your body, if it dies- you die. Do your brain a favor,
wear a helmet. Reflectors are wonderful little reflective disks that are
should be on the spokes of your wheels, the front and back of your pedals,
and the front and back of your bike. If you don't have reflectors on the front
of your bike, put a light there. You can buy bicycle lights that are battery
powered or that use your tires as a base to generate their own electricity.
The generating lights are slightly more difficult to install but they cost less in
the long run. Don't ride your bike after dusk without a strong light.
Rules of the road (and sidewalk too)
No matter how funny it may sound, always wear
shoes while riding your bike, you could stub your toe. Always use the hand signals.
Here are some pictures:
Right
Left Stop
Be attentive and cautious. Drivers are usually busy driving and paying attention to
other cars. Drivers won't always see you. If you are on a busy street stay on the sidewalk.
When you ride in the road, stay on the right side. When a car comes slow down a little to allow
the car to pass. Pay attention to your surroundings, sometimes you might not hear the car until
it is right behind you and you'll need to get out of the way rather quickly. Don't panic,
just calmly get to the side of the road.
