The Vaquita

Whales Dolphins and Porpoises

The Vaquita, or Phocoena sinus, are also called the Cochito or Gulf of California Porpoise. They can reach lengths of 1.2 to 1.5 meters and can weigh between 30 to 55 kilograms. They have 20 to 21 pairs of small, spade-shaped teeth in ther upper jaw and 18 pairs of teeth in their lower jaw. They have an appearence similar to the Harbour porpoise, though they are slightly darker and their dorsal fin has a trailing concave on the edge that is slightly higher then the Harbour porpoise. There is little known about these porpoises. They are mainly thought to be found or confined to the upper part of the Gulf of California. Their population size is unknown but is considered to be very small.
