Decision Number One

Below are two related programs that you will have to choose between.  The description of the program and its cost should help you to decide which you think would be best for Envirotown.

Grasscycling

Business Composting

$20,000

$1,000

Though many people take their grass and dump it in a landfill, there is an alternative.  Cities can inform citizens about the possibility of grasscycling, a system where people leave the grass they mow on their lawn or in compost heaps.  The old grass provides nutrients to new grass, meaning people do not need to buy fertilizers and grass does not end up in landfills.  In 1994, Madison, Wisconsin used this program to save 1,500 tons of grass from landfills.

When businesses build new buildings, they are often unaware of the fact that they can take their materials to a compost center and be paid for them.  Also, after doing landscaping, businesses can take their yard waste to these compost centers.    The compost centers create the compost then sell it back to people who need it.
