The Audubon Society was founded in 1905. It is named after John James Audubon, who was well known as an explorer, artist, and ornithologist. When the group was founded, millions of animals were being killed without any governmental restriction. Birds suffered the worst from the slaughter, and the passenger pigeon, Carolina
parakeet, and great auk went extinct.Eventually, George Bird Grinnell, editor of Forest and Stream, founded the Audubon Society in 1886. When 38,000 people requested to join the organization in just three months, it became too much for him to handle and he gave up. Later on, individual local Audubon Societies began to form in states around the
US. In 1905, they formed the national organization that remains today. Now, the organization boasts 550,000 members in 508 separate chapters throughout the American continents. The organization employs 300 people full time. Its employees include scientists, educators, sanctuary managers, regional and state directors, and government affairs specialist. The Audubon Society has successfully established 100 Audubon Sanctuaries
and nature centers in the United States. Join the Audubon SocietyThe Audubon Society's magazine |
