In 1969, the International Fund for Animal Welfare was created.  At the time, the organization focused on preventing the destruction of harp and hood seals.

Now, three decades later, the organization has greatly broadened its focus and works toward saving all animals.  In fact, the group has been called, "one of the most effective organizations for animal welfare in the world."

The group has three major goals.  It attempts to prevent commercial hunting and trade of wild animals, saves animals that are at immediate risk, and protects natural ecosystems that have not yet been affected by human development.

The organization has offices worldwide, and a large group of members made up mainly of professionals in the environmental field.

Working with governments, nonprofits, and citizens, the group advances its goals and protects animals of all species.
