The main purposes of the organization are to do scientific research on the environment and report its findings.  It produces informational and educational materials in an effort to inform the public and support a policy.

Anyone is allowed to join the organization, and all members receive Earth Matters, the group's magazine that discusses recent environmental news.  Over 95% of the group's funding comes from public donations and members.

The Guardian newspaper called Friends of the Earth "the UK's most effective environment group."  It has 250 divisions throughout England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
