The main purpose of the organization is to enforce the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) which was signed by 150 countries in June of 1992.  The agreement requires countries to conserve their biological resources and promote biodiversity.

The organization is composed of non-governmental organizations in the environmental and developmental fields.

In order to make decisions, BIONET holds meetings in Washington, D.C. that its members can attend.

BIONET also has an office in Washington where it employs two staff people.  Their job is to provide the organization's services to its members.
