List of Endangered Animals

http://www.wcmc.org.uk/species/data/species_sheets/

This list of endangered animals is provided by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre.

It lists animals, birds, and marine creatures.  Notably, plant species are not present on this list.  There are thousands of plant species that are endangered throughout the world.

Many scientists say that a great number of animals and plants will go extinct without people ever knowing that they existed.  Many of these species exist in habitats that have not been fully explored, but are being destroyed.

Every year, many additional species become endangered and others go extinct.  At the same time, it is possible for species to recover from the threat of being extinct.  For example, the bald eagle was recently removed from the list of endangered species.

Action by governments or environmentalists can help to prevent animals from becoming endangered or extinct.  Often, governments will make it illegal to kill endangered animals.

These efforts are not always successful though.  Poachers may continue to kill animals even if it is illegal.  It is also possible that a species will already have reached a point where it is impossible for it to increase in numbers and come back.  In these cases, it may be only a matter of time before the species goes extinct.

As a result, the best method of preventing extinction is to stop the forces that cause animals to become endangered in the first place.
