April 1999

Earth Day was founded in the United States by Gaylord Nelson years ago.  Since then, it has become a global event participated in by people from around the world.

This year, Earth Day was celebrated across the world once again.

The UN launched its International Conference on Health and Environment: Global Partners for Global Solutions, and the Commission on Sustainable Development will also meet on Earth Day.

In New York City, a variety of environment-related public forums were held.  The topics discussed included waste and toxic substances, cleaning up the environment, planting trees, watching birds, and many other subjects.

Parisians celebrated the annual event with a festival including theater, music, and a circus.  The people there called for cleaner environmental policies.

Spain also held a festival in the city of Barcelona.  In addition, a political rally also took place in a city park.

The Israeli city of Tel Aviv had a daylong environment event, which ended with a rock concert.  The event was supported by the country's largest environmentalist groups and organized by Green Action.

Beijing Music Radio broadcast the We Love Music, We Love the Earth concert from Tokyo, while Earth Day China invited people from around the world to contact them about environmental issues.
