Effects of industralisation on USSR

  • Russians were subject to poor working conditions, low wages and strict labour discipline.
  • The concentration on heavy industries at the expense of consumer goods meant that shortages of basic goods like shoes and clothings were common.
  • The shock brigades and Stakhanov movement also instilled fear and put pressure on Russians to work extremely hard.
  • It made USSR a stronger country with a more stable economic base.
  • The expansion and development of heavy industries allowed manufacture of war weapons. This gave USSR the capacity to fight a long war.
