Effects of collectivisation on USSR
Short-terms effects
Opposition and resistance from the kulaks Kulaks were deprived of their land and became ordinary peasants. They resisted by destroying their crops and livestock. Stalin removed this opposition ruthlessly by eliminating the kulaks- executing or deporting them to labour camps. About 300 000 kulak families were deported. This elimination created fear and discontent among many Russians. Decline in production. Massive destruction of crops and livestock led to decline in output level, resulting in famines.
Long-term effects.
Modernisation of farming
Stricter state planning and use of machinery like combine harvesters helped to make farming more efficient and allow greater productivity. Fewer people were needed on the farms. Thus many were freed to help out in the factories
