Alex & David's African Safari

Animals

Lion:

Lions are truly the king of all animals.  They go about eating everything, drinking anything, sleeping anywhere, and just about doing whatever they want.

Baboon:

The males lead the way and the females stay behind to make sure that no one is forgotten.

Buffalo:

The buffalo are defensive animals.  They are native to Africa and are on the endangered species list.  For protection the buffalo have strong horns that come to a point above their eyes.  The Buffalo can only be found in tall grass.   The reason that the Buffalo like tall grass is because it protects them from predators.  Their  hide makes them look like large rocks when they are sitting in tall grass.

Hippo:

Hippos live in or very close to water.  Hippos do very little aside from eating and sleeping.  If disturbed in the water, a Hippo can be one of the most dangerous animals ever known.  This is because they have an extremely big mouth and therefore can swallow a human whole!

Elephant:

Elephants mostly eat grass.  They get protein from rocks that they chisel into edible pieces.  They use their tusks to chisel.

Rhino:

Rhinos, like elephants, eat grass and drink water.  These animals, unlike elephants, do not get protein from chiseled rock.  Rhinos are very territorial.  They will try to stay away from invaders but if they feel too uncomfortable they will charge.  Rhinos are on the endangered species list because many poachers kill the rhinos for their valuable horns.

Flamingo:

Flamingos stay very close to the water.  Their long legs keep them from getting wet.  Their legs also help them catch food.  Because their legs lift them so high they can see all of the fish swimming below them.

Jackal:

Jackals are scavengers.  They get their food from the remains of other animals.  It is an easy life: the lions kill and the jackals eat.   Other scavengers include the hyenas and the vultures.

Zebra:

Zebras eat grass and drink from the same lakes as the elephants.   Zebras live a very happy life except for the fact that they are the lion's favorite food.

Ostrich:

Ostriches eat grass and drink water.  They are very tall so that they can watch over the tall grass for predators.  It may not look like it but ostriches can run extremely fast.  They can run fast because of their long legs.

Wildebeest:

Wildebeests are another of the lions favorite food.  There main goal in life is to survive the migration across the river.  Every year all of the wildebeest cross a large Serengetti river.  While crossing, over one hundred of the animals are drowned or eaten by the crocodiles, hippos, or alligators.

Thompson Gazelle:

These animals are part of the Antelope family but because they are much more swift they are not threatened by the hungry Lions.

Vivid Monkeys:

This particular group of monkeys was stationed in a broken tree.   It is very rare to get this close to Vivid Monkeys because they are easily scared and often climb high into the trees.

Crowned Crane:

The crowned crane is the national bird of Uganda.  Like most animals in Africa the crowned crane eats grass and drinks from the lakes.  But sometimes the crowned cranes go for small snakes and long earth worms.

Giraffe:

Giraffes are vegetarian animals that use their spotted skin as camouflage from possible predators.  Giraffes use their long necks to get untouched food from high in the trees.

Cheetah:

Cheetahs are predators but they have an advantage that no other predator has.   Cheetahs can run up to ninety miles per hour.
