A Chronology of Events

January 20, 1692

Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Parris started to show strange behavior, such as convulsive seizures, blasphemous screaming, mysterious spells, and trancelike states. Within a short time a few other girls from Salem began to show the same symptoms.

Mid-February, 1692

Physicians concluded that the girls were under the influence of Satan be cause they could not determine any physical cause for the symptoms.

End of February, 1692

Forced to identify the source of there sickness the girls named three women, Tituba a Caribbian Indian Slave, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne.

Tituba confessed to have seen Satan sometimes as a "big dog" and sometimes as a hog.

February 29, 1692

Warrants were issued for the arrests of Tituba, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne.

March 1, 1692

Jonathan Corwin and John Hathorne examined the "three sources of the girls affliction".

Tituba confessed to practicing witchcraft.

March 12, 1692

Martha Corey is accused of witchcraft.

March 19, 1692

Rebecca Nurse is accused of witchcraft.

March 21, 1692

Martha Corey was examined by Magistrates Hawthorne and Corwin.

March 24, 1692

Rebecca Nurse is examined by Hathorne and Corwin.

March 28,1692

Elizabeth Proctor is accused of witchcraft.

April 3, 1692

Sarah Cloyce is accused of witchcraft

April 11, 1692

Abigail Hobbs, Bridget Bishop, Giles Corey, and Mary Warren were examined and Abigail Hobbs was the only one that confessed.

April 22, 1692

Nehemiah Abbott, William and Deliverance Hobbs, Edward and Sarah Bishop, Mary Black, Mary Easty, Sarah Wildes, and Mary English were examined by Hathorne and Corwin. Nehemiah Abbott was the only person cleared of charges.

May 2, 1692

Sarah Morey, Lydia Dustin, Susannah Martin, and Dorcas Hoar were examined by Hathorne and Corwin.

May 4, 1692

George Burroughs who lived in Wells, Maine was accused and arrested.

May 10, 1692

Burroughs and one of the afflicted girls were examined by Corwin, Hathorne, Sewall, and Stoughton

May 18, 1692

Mary Easty was released from prison.

May 31, 1692

Martha Carrier, John Alden, Wilmott Red, Elizabeth Howe, and Phillip English were examined by Hathorne, Gedney, and Corwin

June 10, 1692

Bridget Bishop was hanged and she was the execution in the Salem Witch trials.

July 19, 1692

Rebecca Nurse, Susannah Martin, Elizabeth Howe, Sarah Good and Sarah Wildes were hanged.

August 19, 1692

Sr. George Jacobs, Martha Carrier, George Burroghs, John Proctor, and John Willard were hanged on Gallows Hill.

September 22, 1692

Martha Corey, Margaret Scott, Mary Easty, Alice Parker, Ann Pudeator, Wilmott Red, Samual Wardwell and Mary Parker were hanged.
