THE ARTERIES STRUCTURE
.

The cross-section of an artery    Since blood receive blood directly from the heart, they need to have thick muscular and elastic walls so that they will be able to withstand the very high pressure of the blood as it is forced out of the heart.

Elastic fibres in the arteries are the main structure which provide the strength for the artery to resist the high pressure. The nearer the artery is to the heart, the thicker is the elastic fibres. The thick elastic walls also help to maintain the high pressure of the blood in the arteries. The high pressure help push the blood along the artery.
