Dynamics

Though force is not motion, it is related to, or often results in motion.  Sir Isaac Newton established a relationship between forces and movement in the form of three laws:

Law

Definition

Equations & terms

1st

Objects move or remain still in the same way, as long as no net external force acts on them. Also known as law of inertia.

2nd

A net external force (due to unbalanced forces) acting on an object affects the object's speed and/or direction; it causes an acceleration directly proportional to the amount of force applied and in the direction of that force. 1) Also known as law of acceleration.
2) Fnet = ma
3) Force has units of Newtons (N, where 1 N = 1 kgm/s2)

3rd

Where do the forces come from? Other objects, and when one object exerts a force on a second, the second object exerts a force (same magnitude, opposite direction) on the first object. 1) Also known as law of action/reaction forces.
2) Forces that actually move an object must come from a different object
