Flashes

The electronic flash is a unit which produces a very bright flash of light which lasts for a short time (1/500-1/400 sec.). The flash is caused by a high voltage discharge between two electrodes enclosed in a glass cylindrical bulb containing an inert gas such as argon. There are many different types of flashes. Many modern SLRs of the 90s have built-in flashes which run fully automatic. Other flashes are separate units which connect to the camera on a hot shoe which synchronizes the release of the shutter and flash.

Photo taken without flash. Using ambient room light with a longer shutter speed (requiring a tripod) creates a clear, sharp, picture. Color balance of indoor lighting contains excessive red.
Photo taken with flash. The flash reflects off the glass, causing glare and makes the label hard to read. Flash position relative to reflective surfaces is very important. However, flash makes shutter speed hand-holdable and creates a true color balance.
