Using Filters

A filter is any material which, when placed in front of a light source or lens, absorbs some of the light coming through it. Filters can be made of glass or plastic. Filters are generally used with black & white photography to change the light that reaches the film. In color photography (example to the right), filters change the color of the light.

Polarizing filter can be used to reduce reflections from surfaces such as water and glass, and also to darken the sky in color photographs. In addition to changing color, filters can protect your lenses. A U/V filter will block ultraviolet rays as well as dust and liquid from reaching the lens.

A photo of a farm with no color filter.

The same photo with a red filter gives it an older, rustic, mood.

The farm photo with a green filter.

Notice how a polarizing filter makes sky darker.
