Depth of Field

Depth of field can be defined as the distance between the closest and farthest points of a picture that are sharp. Depth of field is controlled by the aperture. When you want your subject to stand out from its background, reduce the depth of field by using a large aperture (small f number). You can also take the photo closer to the subject or use a long focal length lens. To increase depth of field, use a smaller aperture (large f number), take the photo further away, and/or use a short focal length lens.

Photo taken at f/4.5 with low depth of field. Notice how only the closer bike is in focus.
Photo taken at f/16 with high depth of field. The smaller aperture keeps both bikes in focus.

Photo taken at f/4.5 with low depth of field. The bottle of wine stands out from its background.
Photo taken at f/16 with high depth of field. Notice how the sink is much sharper than in the other picture.
