The Aperture

The Aperture
The aperture (highlighted in red) in a lens, is open at its largest size.
The brightness of the light reaching the film is controlled by a hole inside the lens called the aperture. It works like the pupil in a human eye, large in the dark to let more light in and smaller in bright conditions. On older SLRs, the aperture size is controlled by a ring on the lens. New SLRs, where exposure control is automatic or controlled by the body, the aperture is sized automatically. The size of the aperture depends on the shutter speed, film speed, and other variables (see Understanding Exposure).

Movie Requirements
Movie: The Aperture

Minimum Aperture: The aperture is at its smallest size.
Maximum Aperture: The aperture is at its largest size.

f Numbers

The aperture size is dispalyed on the LCD panel of most modern SLRs.
The size of the aperture is labeled by an f-number. A typical set of f numbers of a lens's aperture could be:

2.8 - 4 - 5.6 - 8 - 11 - 16 - 22

The lowest f number (for expample, f 2.8) is the largest opening of the aperture. The highest f number (for example, f 22) is the smallest opening of the aperture.

An older SLRs's aperture size is controlled on the lens by a ring with f numbers on it.
