I always consider used a risk. However, I have owned and used Minolta cameras for nearly 30 years, and the first ones still work. I would say any major brand that does what you want should be OK. I don't know what used SLR's go for -- you should shop around and also consider a very basic new camera (I believe there is, for example, a manual focus Minolta still available).
