: Check out Understanding Exposure and the Virtual Camera on this site. If the proper exposure is 1/ASA at f 16 and you want a larger (lower number) aperture to blur the background, then at f 11 (one stop more light) the shutter speed should be 1/(2 x the ASA). Just keep moving the aperture up one stop and the shutter speed down one stop till you get to the aperture (and limited depth of field) you want to blur the background.
