There are 3 common specs. the first is the focal length such as 28mm, 50mm etc.

Onother common specification indicates the largest aperture setting at which this lens functions. The size of the aperture is indicated by its f-number, i.e., the ratio of the diameter of the opening to the focal length of the lens; a large aperture is indicated by a small numerical f-number.

Another specification shows the ratio of photo image to actual item size that the lens may be used to generate. So 1:1.4 means that the lens can create an image that is almost life size (for very small items obviously) on the film or slide.
