: hi i would like to know how a SLR camera works An SLR (or Single Lens Reflex) camera works in a way slightly different from a conventional point and shoot camera. In an SLR, light enters the camera through the lens and hits a special mirror (situated just in front of the film) which reflects the light onto a five-sided prism (a pentaprism) which turns the image left-to-right and right-side-up and directs it to the viewfinder. When you click the button, the mirror moves out of the way momentarily, allowing the light to fall on the film behind it. So what you see in the viewfinder is exactly what you capture on film. Some disadvantages of SLRs are of course, the high price and the camera shake which can occur due to the movement of the mirror. In a cheapo point and shoot camera, the viewfinder image is slightly different to what is caught on film, which can lead to parallax errors.
Hope this answers your question.
