Underexposure with Canon EOS 3000

I keep getting underexposed photographs with this camera, with a rather high contrast as well, in the fully automatic mode. Exposure compensation gives slightly better results, but I get better results with my cheapo point-and-shoot! Can anyone help, or point me to a good source of information regarding this?
