shutter/aperture settings at night

ive been into photography for close to a year and i just got my first slr for christmas. after about a month i had the hang of it but i still have trouble setting apertures and shutter speeds. i take pictures of bmx riding so its really high speed. in daylight i shoot around shutter speed 500 and i let the aperture set itself. but at night i have a little bit of trouble with that. so if anyone can help me please do.
