Hi Jenny, I own a Nikon and have loved it. It is probably one of the finest cameras I have ever used, and I've used more than a few. This being said, I just bought two, yes two Pentax ZX-M 's for two nieces. I found this camera to be an outstanding deal, minimum auto features - thus forcing the user to learn photography vs. the camera doing it all. It has many of the features my Nikon has at a fraction of the cost. My advise would be - if you can afford it, shoot go for the Nikon, you can't go wrong, but if cost is at all an issue, look at the Pentax, I myself, was very surprised. About fixing the Canon, I would be inclined to ditch it. Good luck. - C
