You should be able to hand hold a lens if the shutter speed is about 1/focal length of the lens.
f 2.8 is fast enough to hand hold a typical 28 - 80 mm lens outdors or in strong indoor light (i.e., as long as you use a fast enough film and have enough light to get a shutter speed of 1/90 of faster).
