LOS ANGELES, CA., November 22, 1999 Paul Lorah, Joel Reiner, and Dustin Sheffield have been selected from more than 10,000 participants to have their Web site named a "Silver Award" winner in the Interdisciplinary category. They were recognized for their Web designing expertise in Los Angeles today, at the ThinkQuest Awards Gala ceremony. The teams site, SLR Photography Online, encourages visitors to explore the basics of photography through interactive models and guides.
The fourth annual ThinkQuest Internet Challenge, a philanthropic and educational initiative, invites teams of students, ages 12 to 19, to work together as they investigate an educational topic of interest to them and create an interactive Web site. Multi-national teams from around the world collaborate for more than eight months to gather data, conduct research, and leverage the power of the Internet as they build educationally rich sites. Upon completion, each entry becomes a permanent member of the ThinkQuest Library. The Library contains nearly 3,000 award-winning sites that are made available to Internet users across the globe.
"I am simply overwhelmed with the quality and innovation demonstrated by these young people," comments Allan H. Weis, founder of ThinkQuest. "These kids have mastered the technology to build dynamic Web sites, developed a sense of global community, and learned how to help others, all skills that are needed for success in the future."
Beginning November 19, 1999, all ThinkQuest Internet Challenge finalists attended the Fourth Annual ThinkQuest Awards Weekend in Los Angeles. Judging for the entire competition was conducted by the Internet Society. The judging weekend culminated on November 22 with the gala ceremony where leaders in the fields of education, science, technology, and government announced the contest winners. Adding to the excitement, this years ceremony featured celebrities including Academy Award Winner Marlee Matlin, Olympic gold Medallist Kerri Strug, Bill Nye the Science Guy and LeVar Burton.
Sponsors for the event include; Dell Computer Corporation, Goldman Sachs, Global Schoolhouse at Lightspan, Nortel Networks and Spencer Trask and Company, among others.
