It's Affect on Tibet Medicine For more than 2,300 years, astronomy and astrology have influenced Tibetan medicine. This is called Tibetan Astro. Science and it is divided into three major categories. The Kartsi, or white calculation, is similar to Western astronomy and is the study of the stars and planets with mathematics. This came from Lord Shiva's teachings about the Sri Kalachakra and the Arising from Sarodhaya Tantra. The Nagtsi, or the black calculation, is similar to Western astrology and is a study of the relations in the comparison of friend to enemy or son to mother. This system has no calculations. The yang char is a secret Tantric practice that is actually within the category Kartsi. The term yang char actually means "arising vowels." People who study and utilize these systems of treatment are called Astro-practitioners. There are four important events in a lifetime in which astro-practitioners are needed: the birth of a child, the time of marriage, serious illness, and death. Astrological and astronomical chart are created to predict an individual's future, and if it is found to be unfavorable, then antidotes are used to give good fortune. Astro-practitioners are said to have the ability to determine an ailing spirit and remove it through prayer. When a person dies, these astro-practitioners decide when and how the body should be laid to rest. Advice will also be asked from an astro-practitioner if someone and his or her family are planning to move. The practitioner will tell them how, when, and where to move. Astro-practitioners are a tremendous source of help and guidance. They are the consultants of the Tibetan people. These people are important to the Tibetan culture even to this day.
