Seeking the Sun
Main Activity Project Name: Realizing the Space Mission: This activity is designed to expand the student's awareness of the vast distance from earth to the sun. Students must determine the diameter of the Earth, and the distance from the earth to the sun. Students then choose an object, such as a penny, to represent the earth's diameter. If a penny represents the earth's diameter, how many pennies, laid side by side, represent the distance from the earth to the sun? Is that distance greater than the main hallway of your school? What other ways can students physically demonstrate this numerical relation? Alternate Activities 1) Students will record the sun's activity (rising,   setting, if it is cloudy, sunny), and how the sun   affects their mood and activities.
