Ngo Dynasty (939 AD - 967 AD)
by Ch'ng Yaohong
The decline of the Tang Dynasty was accompanied by disorder.
It was a chance the Vietnamese were waiting for. In a protracted
war that ended with the celebrated battle of Bach Dang, General
Ngo Quyen then decided to transfer the capital to Co Loa, which
had been the capital of the Au Lac kingdom. Ascending the throne
in 939, he was crowned Ngo Vuong and established an independent
state of An Nam. The administration was primitive, with the
king as the head of the state. The court consisted of only two
officers: military and civil. The reign was peaceful until his
death in 944. The years after his death were marked with succession
disputes. Rebellions were rampant. The death of Nam Tan Vuong(younger
son of Ngo Quyen) in 965 caused the country to be divided into
12 regions, each against the other.
