Continued Chinese Domination (220 AD - 938 AD)
by Ch'ng Yaohong
When East Han fell, China was divided into three kingdoms. Qiao
Chi was under East Wu and renamed Qiao Zhou. It was administered
as a Chinese province and a campaign against the Kingdom of Champa
was launched. This period of occupation ended abruptly when a
scholar named Ly Bon led an armed revolt and succeeded in chasing
out the overlords. Ly Bon renamed the territory Van Xuan and founded
the Ly Dynasty, which lasted until the Chinese once again regained
supremacy in 545. Outbreaks of violent battles between the Chinese
and Vietnamese took place in the following era. It ended with
the third period of Chinese domination which lasted from 603 until
938. During this time, the Chinese made concerted efforts to establish
their culture and civilisation in Nam Viet, which they renamed
An Nam. However, numerous insurrections broke out despite the
solid administrative structure imposed by the Tang government.
