Chinese Domination (111 BC - 220 AD)
by Ch'ng Yaohong
After Trieu Dau's defeat, Nam Viet became a Chinese protectorate
under the new name of Qiao Chi. The territory of Qiao Chi comprised
of 3 districts, each ruled by a Chinese mandarin. They had to
pay taxes and tributes. The Viet resisted the Chinese government's
efforts to introduce Chinese literature, arts and agricultural
techniques. They not only guarded their national identity but
also fought fiercely to preserve it.
The first Chinese occupation finally ended in
39 AD. The oppressive rule and injustices of a cruel governor
provoked a victorious armed
revolt against the Chinese authorities, led by two sisters, Trung
Trac and Trung Nhi, heroines known as Hai Ba Trung. Trung Trac
became the Queen of the Independent Viet. The Capital was in Me
Linh (now Phu Tho). However, after a short three year reign, the
Chinese armies overran them and the country returned to the arms
of China. Defeated by the Hans, the Trung Sisters committed suicide
by drowning themselves in the Hat Giang River in 43 AD, in the
2nd month of the Lunar Calendar.
After
the collapse of Trung Vuong, the Han reinforced the administration
with Hans. They forced the Viet to follow Han laws, the Han way
of living, immigrating vast numbers of Han people into the country
and teaching the Han language in an attempt of Sinicization of
Viet. The domination was very brutal with higher taxes and tributes.
However, the Han also introduced Chinese writing, Confucianism,
science, medicine, architecture and many other cultural aspects
etc. The scholars and religious travellers also brought Buddhism,
Taoism and the civil code of Confucianism to Viet people. In the
2nd century AD, many Buddhist pagodas were constructed in Luy
Lau (Bac Ninh). Northern Vietnamese was so influenced by the Chinese
that it became central factor of their complex make-up. Chinese
rule continued through the collapse of the East Han Dynasty.
