Trieu Dynasty (207 BC - 111 BC)
by Ch'ng Yaohong
Under the Trieu Dynasty, Nam Viet progressively
entered the Chinese sphere of influence. In exchange for periodic
tributes to the court of the Han emperor, Nam Viet received protection
against foreign invasion. This period was marked by continual intrigues,
including a Chinese emperor's plot to seize Nam Viet, a scheme that
was exposed and denounced. Less then a century later, the Han emperor
Wudi sent his mighty armies to conquer Nam Viet. Despite the defending
army’s fierce resistance, Nam Viet yielded to the Han invaders.
In 111 BC, Trieu Dau was defeated. Nam Viet was then annexed to
Han and renamed Qiao Chi. |
