Auc Lac (257 BC - 208 BC)
by Ch'ng Yaohong
In the 3rd century BC, the Van Lang State was declining slowly and was defeated in 257 BC by Au Viet tribe north of Van Lang. Founded in present-day Vinh Phu Province, the capital was divided into fifteen provinces. Thuc Phan, head of Au Viet, then unified the two tribes into one. Under the title of King An Doung Voung, Thuc Phan established the new kingdom of Auc Lac with his capital at Phuc An(present-day Co Loa, Dong Anh District, Hanoi). He built the Co Loa Citadel with 9 large earthen ramparts constructed in a maze-like shape resembling the spirals of a snail, for defence purpose after defeating the struggle against the Qin.
Iron ore was extracted and made into tools during this dynasty. Agriculture stepped forward with using buffalo for ploughing soil. The pottery was still primitive but better in baking treatment. Bricks and tiles were used in construction. The commoners were productive force, they cultivated and paid a rent to the rulers. They also had other duties to the commune and country including service in army. Due to oppression from an ambitious general, Trieu Da from the south of the Middle Kingdom, the independent kingdom of Nam Viet was formed. Proclaiming himself king in 208 BC, he began the Trieu Dynasty.
