Ho Dynasty (1400 AD - 1428 AD)
by Ch'ng Yaohong

Le Qui Ly(Ho Qui Ly) , a minister of the court took advantage of his aunt's marriage to the king. He usurped the throne from the Trans in 1400 and changed the name of the country into Dai Ngu. The capital was in Tay Do(Thanh Hoa).

Despite his shrewdness, he was an excellent ruler. The army was reorganised and reinforced. Taxes were revised and ports were opened to trading ships. Under a new fiscal system, coins were taken out of circulation and replaced with bank notes. Restriction was imposed on land ownership. In the administrative domain, Ho introduced the extension of royal appointments to his loyal servants. On education and society, he reformed the examination regulations, opened a new educational centre and opened the public health department.

His reign however, sparked off an attack from China. Well aware of his audacity, the Chinese Ming emperor sent troops under the pretext of helping the movement faithful to the Tran Dynasty. The Ming intervention led to the fall of the Ho Dynasty in 1407. During the short period of Chinese occupation that followed, the Vietnamese suffered inhumane exploitation. The Chinese sought to destroy the Vietnamese national identity. Vietnamese literature, artistic and historical works were either burned or taken to China and replaced by Chinese classics in schools. Chinese fashion was imposed on all Vietnamese women. Religious rites and costumes were banished or replaced.
