The Beginning
by Ch'ng Yaohong
According to Han and Viet cosmogony, the world was divided into
the Five Elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth or sometimes
the Wu Han, which represents the Five Regions: Centre, North,
South, East and West.
From ancient time, a kingdom controlled the heart
of the Asian continent, its rulers basing their power on the concepts
of Five Elements and Rive Regions. Known as the Middle Kingdom
or Zhong Hua, its power centre was located in the Five Mounts
Territory.
There were two major races, the Han and the Viet.
While the Han were homogenous, the Viets consisted of hundreds
of tribes. Archaeological studies show that the Viets existed
400,000 years ago in the swampy woods of the Red River delta.
The Viets settled south of the Yellow River and developed agricultural
skills while the Hans became experts in hunting and warfare.
Viets believed that they were the descendants
of Shen Nong, one of the three chiefs who ruled the Five Mounts
territory. Complying to historical folklore, De Minh, a third
generation descendant of Shen Nong, fled to the south of the Five
Mounts and married Princess Vu Tien. Their son, Loc Tuc became
Kinh Duong Vuong, King of the Kinh and Doung Territory. He married
the daughter of the god of the seas.
His son, Lac Long Quan and his wife Au Co had
100 sons and the Kingdom of Bach Viet. In 2879 BC, the eldest
son was crowned as king of Lac Viet. He named himself King Hung
Vuong, and Lac Viet was renamed Vac Lang. It was the most powerful
kingdom around and encompassed most of present-day northern and
central Vietnam.
