Rebecca, no one really knows the age of the universe. There are rough calcs but due to the red shift and how fast the universe is expanding we just can't know for sure. Until we can travel faster than the speed of light (which will never happen anyway) and then do some more calcualtions in a more distant section of our universe..... As what the universe was like before the Big Bang it is all theory. Some believe as I do that the universe was just a ball of compact energy that that was surrounded by a black "veil" as it were (think of it as a balloon surrounding another balloon), then the inner balloon explodes and the srapnel sent out from the inner collides with the fabric of the outer and thus the outer expands. THis could only work if the force is equal in every direction. I could write more but I'll mail you the rest.
