Anyone who often writes has certainly dreamed of just
being able to talk and a computer would write the words
(sentences) spoken. A few years ago, this dream remained
a dream, with little chance of the dream becoming
reality. There were attempts to develop a program for
large scale computers to do just that, but the results
were insufficient. Just for an individual word to be
recognised it could take hours. In the meantime, personal
computer capacity has grown immensely and the computing
process adapted and improved. The result : the use of a
language recognition program is no longer limited to
large scale computers but is now also possible on the
home personal computer. Today, one can buy such a program
for a reasonable price. Use Possibilities Generally
speaking, there are two use possibilities for the
Language Recognition software : dictation of a text into
a word processing program or with editor, using
navigation put it into the operating system. If one just
wants a program which will start language commands, open
and close windows or directories, then one can find such
programs for under 100 German Marks. If in addition one
wants to dictate letters or reports directly into the
word processor, then one must choose a more expensive
product. Speaking Method Today there are two types of
language recognition programs. One of them is supported
by a so-called discrete way of speaking. For this
program, it / is/ necessary / to / pause / after / every
/ word. The advantage : the program needs less system
resources and needs only software which supports a
natural spoken language. The disadvantages : the speed
does not correspond to normal spoken language. One must
concentrate intensely on speaking out every individual
word. The second type of program supports the normal
spoken language, as one is accustomed to speaking. One
can speak « normally », i.e. as one is accustomed to.
The advantages : one can dictate in flowing sentences
directly into the PC and not have to change one's normal
way of speaking. The disadvantages : these programs need
much more computer capacity and a larger memory as
programs which support a « discrete » way of speaking.Every trademark
