Pickering, John

John Pickering was a U.S. District Court judge of New Hampshire, he was also a federal judge and was known as being an alcoholic. Pickering was impeached on March 12, 1804, for "wickedly, meaning and intending to injure the revenues of the United States". During the trial he becam so drunk that he challenged President Thomas Jefferson to a duel. The Senate voted 20-6, preventing Pickering from returing to office after deciding whether or not the mentally insane could be tried for impeachment.
