Belknap, William
Willaim Belknap, Secretary of War in the Grant Administration, was impeached and forced to resign as secretary of war pending his trial in the Senate for admitting that he had been slacking off on his duties to grant Indian trading-post concession rights. Even though he had resigned, the Judiciary Committee continued to find impeachable articles on Belknap and ended up impeaching him on 5 different accounts. He went to trial in the Senate, but in the ended the Senate decided that they no longer had jurisdiction over him. He was acquitted on August 1, 1876.
