Emotions like fear, anger, guilt, happiness or depression, are unique human qualities, but, unfortunately, often also the reason for sleepless nights. Too much thought and too many worries do not go together with sleep. Therefore it is advisable to not try to get too emotional before going to bed (like by watching certain types of movies or arguing with your spouse). Otherwise, your brain will still actively thinking or worrying about something, while you will be wanting to get to sleep.
Emotions can be divided into two dimensions: one is the quality which varies from positive to negative (e.g.: happy/sad) and the other is the intensity- feelings can range from strong to weak (e.g.: a bit sad/very sad). Especially emotions with high intensity are sleep's biggest enemies. Although we cannot turn off our feeling as we go to bed, we can use our mind power to influence our emotions in favor of sleep. Emotions are states of mind which appear without us consciously wanting them to. Often they are negative, which may lead to insomnia or to nightmares.
As they are almost always dramatized thoughts, we can try to positively influence them by reminding ourselves "to stay on the ground", by using a logical, rational mind. By thinking rationally, we dampen the intensity of our emotion and begin to realize, "Hey, the situation is not so extreme after all. My emotions were exaggerated." We admit that this advice is given easily, but to follow it needs willpower and optimism. Applied in a right manner, you will be able to control you emotions before going to bed. All sleepers would probably benefit from thinking positive thoughts at bedtime and then clearing their minds for sleep.
