Advanced & Delayed Sleep Phase Syndromes

Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome

This occurrence would be the extreme "night owl," one who always feels the urge to stay up later and to sleeps in later the next day than they should. These people's body clocks seem to be delayed from the normal sleep-wake cycle. This tends to be a common problem with college-age students. If schedule adjustment is not possible, exposure to light in the morning and to avoidance of bright light in the evening is recommended. Avoiding caffeine in the afternoon would also help.

Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome

This occurrence would be the extreme "morning lark," one who always feels the urge to to to sleep and wake up earlier than they should. These people's body clocks seem to be delayed from the normal sleep-wake cycle. This tends to be a common problem with the elderly. If it's not possible to adapt your schedule to what seems to be your body's natural clock, there are some adjustments that may be helpful. It is advised to expose yourself to light in the late afternoon and evening and to avoid bright light early in the morning. If possible, eliminate anything that may disturb your sleeping in the morning (make sure your windows have shading; don't allow pets that will wake you up come into your bedroom in the morning; have family members that must get up earlier than you remain as quiet as possible, etc.)
