Sleep Disorders
- Advanced and Delayed Sleep Phase Syndromes:
A person 's sleep wake cycle is either always late or always early.
- Apnea, see Sleep Apnea.
- Bedwetting, or enuresis, occurs most
often in children
- Bruxism, see Grinding Teeth.
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. Not
technically classified as traditional sleep disorders, these can coexist with
sleep problems. Sleep-deprivation is integral to FM. CFS may fluctuate
between hypersomnia and insomnia.
- Enuresis, see Bedwetting.
- Excessive Daytime Sleepiness,
or EDS, is being overly sleepy during the day.
- Fibromyalgia, see Chronic fatigue syndrome and ...
- Grinding Teeth, or Bruxism, can
be treated with orthodontic appliances.
- Hypersomnia, needing to sleep "too much."
- Insomnia, not a Sleep
Disorder, per se, but a big problem.
- Narcolepsy patients uncontrollably fall asleep
during the day.
- Night Terrors are not associaed with vivid
dreams and are different from nightmares.
- Somnambulism
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea, see Sleep Apnea
- Periodic Limb Movements involves twitches and
jerks during sleep onset and sleep.
- REM Sleep Behavior Disorder is a dangerous
condition in which the sleeper acts out his or her dreams.
- Restless Leg Syndrome persists even by day,
and can delay sleep onset.
- Sleep Apnea People stop breathing a number
of times during sleep. A serious disorder that can be life-threatening if not
treated.
- Sleepwalking, or Somnambulism,
can be normal for children, but dangerous if adaptations aren't made. In adults
and adolescents it is a disorder.
- Snoring can be normal occurence during sleep,
but often major indicator of sleep apnea. Read up, then see a
Doctor!
- Somnambulism, see Sleepwalking
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is
a mysterious and devastating condition in which a young infant dies while sleeping
for no apparent reason. Find out how prevention efforts are making a difference
