King Pellinore and two of his three sons were slain. King Pellimore’s wife took the third son into a forest. Percivale grew up wild. When he was 15 he met five knights who told him of King Arthur’s realm of Logres. Percivale rode to Caerleon. When he left the forest he found a tent where a maiden was sleeping. He replaced her ring with his own and kissed her while she remained sleeping. He then rode on to Carlen. Arthur held court there. When he entered Arthur’s hall he saw a knight in golden armor. This knight took Arthur’s drinking cup, and after draining it, he rode off with it. Percivale went to retrieve the cup. He rode after him into the country, challenged the thief, and attacked. Percivale killed him. He had trouble stripping the golden armor from him. Sir Gonemans assisted him. He was an old knight. He offered to teach Percivale the art of chivalry. After spending the summer with Sir Gonemans, Percivale went in search of adventure. He found the castle of Carboneck which appeared abandoned so he went in and played chess on a magic board. He continuously lost. He drew his sword to hack up the chess piece but a maiden approached and warned him not to. Her name was Blanchefleur and he discovered that she was the same girl that he kissed in the tent. They both confessed a mutual love for one another. Percivale was filled with peace after three maidens appeared bearing the holy relics of Christ’s passion. Blanchefleur told Percivale that the Grail Quest was approaching. He was excited for such a quest and rushed off to the forest. He found that Carboneck and Blanchefleur had disappeared. He searched but knew he would not find them till after the Grail Quest. Percivale rode to Caerleon. Arthur saw him and sent Sir Kay to see who he was. Percivale was furious after being struck with a medal rod by Sir Kay. Sir Kay was hurt badly in combat. Arthur showed himself, took the goblet stolen by the knight, and he then made Percivale a knight. He told Percivale that the Merlin had foretold his coming. Percivale arrived just prior to the beginning of the Grail Quest.
