Lesson #7: Expressing emotions

To develop in students an understanding of the key components of emotions. Students should also be aware of the role that both body language and facial expressions have in our abilty to both express and interpret emotions.

Method:

(a) Divide the class into small groups. Provide a list of the following emotions:
1. Surprise
2. Anger
3. Disgust
4. Sadness
5. Fear
6. Happiness

(b) One volunteer from each group is to express each emotion. Have half of the groups express these emotions with their face only (hands in pockets and sitting down). The other half of the groups may use body movements as well to represent these emotions.

(b) While each group is presenting the emotions, the rest of the class should write down which emotion they think is being expressed.

(c) Compare the results for the facial expression only groups with the groups who could also use body language. Were there any differences? How might you explain observed differences? What other factors might be important? (Acting ability?)
